Windows 11 on a refurbished laptop: compatibility checklist
How to check CPU support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and official Windows 11 compatibility before buying an older business laptop.
Start here
The ability to boot Windows 11 is not proof of official hardware support. Verify the actual CPU and all system requirements.
Identify the exact CPU first
Business laptop families can have CPUs from different generations. “ThinkPad T480 i5” or “Latitude i7” alone does not confirm operating system compatibility.
Compare the precise processor model with the latest Microsoft support requirements and CPU lists, which may change.
Checklist
- Full CPU model number
- Current Microsoft support list
- CPU variant in the offered unit
Verify firmware and other requirements
CPU compatibility is only one factor. TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability and other minimum requirements also matter. A listed TPM option does not prove it is enabled in the device on sale.
Ask the seller for the result of Microsoft PC Health Check or verifiable firmware configuration.
Checklist
- TPM 2.0
- UEFI and Secure Boot
- Official compatibility verification
Be careful with bypass installations
Windows may run on unsupported hardware. That is not a guarantee of official support or future updates.
For work and long-term predictability, require evidence that the entire configuration meets Microsoft’s official requirements.
Checklist
- Do not rely on a desktop screenshot alone
- Ask how Windows was installed
- Keep documented compatibility evidence
Common question
Is an eighth-generation CPU enough?
Not by itself. Exact CPU support and every other hardware requirement still need checking.
