How to check a used laptop battery before buying
Understand Windows battery reports, charge capacity, battery wear and what to ask sellers of refurbished laptops.
Start here
“Battery holds a charge” does not tell you how long a device will run for your tasks. Ask for evidence from the individual unit.
Ask for a battery report
Windows can generate a report with powercfg /batteryreport. Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity and examine usage history for a rough picture of battery wear.
This is not a guaranteed runtime prediction: firmware reporting, calibration and workload affect the numbers.
Checklist
- Report from the actual machine
- Design versus Full Charge Capacity
- Battery is detected and charges normally
Look for physical warning signs
Sudden shutdowns, swelling, unusual heat or unreliable charging can indicate failure. A swollen battery is a safety issue: do not puncture it or continue using it.
If a laptop contains more than one battery, request information about each one.
Checklist
- No swelling or excessive heat
- Stable charging
- Check every battery where multiple are fitted
Budget for replacement realistically
Battery availability, spare-part pricing and replacement difficulty differ by laptop family. Check the cost of parts and service before buying.
Battery-life figures from the original launch brochure are not evidence of how a used battery behaves today.
Checklist
- Compatible replacement price
- Service and installation costs
- Observed runtime under a practical workload
Common question
Is the reported battery health percentage sufficient?
No. Combine that estimate with charging behaviour, measured runtime, temperature and physical condition.
