Used business laptop checklist: what to inspect before buying

Inspect the individual unit, not merely its model name. Identical-looking laptops can ship with different CPUs, screens, storage and battery conditions.

Request the exact configuration

Record the complete CPU model, installed memory, SSD capacity and type, screen resolution, keyboard layout and precise hardware variant. An “i7” badge is not a meaningful specification by itself.

Ask whether a compatible power supply is included, which parts were replaced during refurbishment, and which written terms apply to the sale.

Inspect hardware and access controls

Test the keyboard, trackpad, wireless connection, webcam, speakers, relevant ports and charging. Check the hinges and chassis near the screen mounts.

You should be able to access firmware settings without an unknown password. Check that the device is not locked to a previous organisation or owner account.

Calculate the real cost and preserve evidence

Add shipping and likely battery, charger or memory replacement costs. A low sticker price can hide expensive work.

Save the listing, images and seller messages. Check the written return and warranty terms before payment; they vary with the seller and transaction.
