RAM and SSD upgrades in a refurbished business laptop
Learn how to identify soldered memory, free slots, SSD form factors and realistic upgrade options before buying a used laptop.
Start here
Not every business laptop is easy to upgrade. Devices within the same family can vary in memory layout and storage options.
Confirm memory layout in the exact variant
RAM may be replaceable, fully soldered or partly soldered. Check manufacturer documentation for the actual configuration instead of assuming there is a free slot.
Look for the supported memory limit and slot count. Restrictions can come from the board layout or from modules already installed.
Checklist
- Soldered versus replaceable memory
- Number and occupancy of slots
- Documented RAM ceiling
Identify the SSD interface and form factor
โ256 GB SSDโ does not reveal whether a system supports 2.5-inch storage, M.2 SATA or NVMe. Confirm the interface and physical form factor in the specifications.
Check whether replacing the drive requires opening the chassis, and plan how existing data would be moved.
Checklist
- SSD type and physical size
- Available versus occupied drive bays
- Backup and migration plan
Include upgrade cost and risk
Add the price of memory, storage, tools and any technician time. Avoid opening a device before you understand the correct procedure and warranty terms.
If soldered RAM is insufficient for your workload, choose the appropriate configuration from the outset.
Checklist
- Total installed upgrade cost
- Warranty terms for servicing
- Price of a better-equipped configuration
Common question
Will any M.2 SSD work?
No. Physical appearance alone does not guarantee matching interface, length or firmware support.
